PETTIT, Charles Arthur, Ret. Staff Sgt., 78, of Clayville, passed peacefully from his life on November 6, 2007. He leaves behind three loving daughters, Jane Stake, Barbara Moomau, Brenda and husband, Benji Cournow; devoted niece, Shirley Burkett and husband, Jerry; six grandchildren, Michael Stake and fiancee, Jessica, Laura Wiles, Brandon Moomau, Cheyenne, Sierra and Hunter Cournow; and one great-granddaughter, Hannah Stake; and many other relatives and special friends who helped care for him, including Jerry Burkett, Jeff Thomas and Michael Morris. He was born in Highland Springs, son of the late Herbert B. and Ida Belle Pettit. He was the widower of Edna Rae Morgan Pettit and they had 32 precious years together. He was also predeceased by a brother, Elton H. Pettit; and sister, Elizabeth P. Moore. He was a wonderful husband, father and dedicated veteran. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1971 at Fort Eustis, after giving over 20 years of service. He also worked for the Newport News Sheriff's Department, Powhatan Ready Mix and M.G. Thalhimers. During his years of declining health, he was cared for at home by his daughter, Barbara and granddaughter, Laura. He had a great sense of humor and positive attitude. He spent the past two weeks in McGuire's Hospice unit. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rte. 60), Powhatan, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday. Interment Graceland Baptist Church Cemetery.
